Vacuum oils

Using high quality vacuum oil in rotary vacuum pumps is important to ensure the optimum performance of rotary vacuum pumps used on scanning and transmission electron microscopes, sputter/carbon coaters, vacuum ovens and other vacuum systems. Generally, it is advised to change the vacuum oil once a year or sooner if the colour of the oil changes from clear to dark yellow/light brown.

There is a choice of two vacuum pump oils:

Edwards Ultragrade 19 vacuum pump oil for single-stage and dual-stage rotary pumps made by Edwards, Agilent, Adixen, Alcatel, Varian, Leybold, Oerlikon, Ulvac, Ilmvac, Hitachi and other brands (check pump details). Available in 1L or 4L sizes.

Pfeiffer P3 vacuum pump oil for the Pfeiffer UNO and DUO series rotary vacuum pumps. Pfeiffer P3 vacuum fluid has the correct viscosity, sealing and lubrication properties for Pfeiffer rotary pumps.

Pfeiffer P3 vacuum oil is also compatible with many other brands of rotary vacuum pumps (please check pump details).

Vacuum greases

Micro-Tec G4 vacuum grease and Molykote grease

High-vacuum silicone grease have been designed for sealing and lubrication in vacuum and pressure applications. It is typically a stiff, non-melting silicone lubricating grease which maintains its consistency over a temperature range of -40 to 204ºC. High-vacuum grease is recommended for vacuum systems up to 10-6 mbar. It has a translucent white colour and a density of 1.1 g/cm3. Evaporation rate at 200ºC is in the 0.5-1% range. Silicone high vacuum grease has good resistance against mineral and vegetable oils, aqueous solutions of inorganic salts and diluted acids and alkali’s. Available silicone high vacuum grease are Micro-Tec G4 in a 60 gram jar and Molykote / Dow Corning 976V in a 150 gram tube ( the brand name has changed to Molykote due to companies restructuring – no change in the formula/composition).
Due to the initial outgassing, it is recommended to pre-condition the grease under vacuum and operating temperature until the required vacuum level has been reached.

Typical applications include:

  • Seal and lubricate vacuum components
  • Seal and lubricate vacuum feedthroughs
  • Sealing glass desiccators and lubricate glass seals
  • Lubricate O-rings on microscopes
  • Lubricate and seal fine threads
  • Lubricate stop-cocks, plug valves. Control valves and flow meter bearings
  • Lubricate laboratory equipment
  • Lubricate synthetic rubber gaskets and seals in high-temperature applications
  • Protect seals in an aqueous environment
  • Corrosion protection

Krytox 207, GPL206 and GPL 205  are a long-lasting, white buttery greases which are nonreactive, nonflammable, safe in chemical and oxygen service. It only contains carbon, oxygen and fluorine, but no hydrogen or silicone. It will not burn or support combustion. It is an ideal grease for vacuum parts which are exposed to air such as rods in vacuum loading locks, vacuum door seals, moving aperture holders and valves. Krytox does not degrade in contact with air, does not contain any silicone and is basically chemically inert.  Krytox GPL207/206/205 greases consist of Krytox perfluoropolyether (PFPE) fluorinated synthetic oil and Krytox 2000 polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It also exhibits excellent anti-seize properties. It can be used up to a service temperature of 288°C. Originally a Dupont product, now a product of Chemours. Krytox GPL207/206/205 are alternatives for Braycote 803 and the OC Five / OC Seven greases.
Due to initial outgassing, it is recommended to pre-condition the grease under vacuum and operating temperature until the required vacuum level has been reached.

Typical applications include:

  • seal and lubricate in oxygen applications
  • seal and lubricate vacuum components
  • seal and lubricate load-lock rods
  • seal and lubricate vacuum feedthroughs
  • lubricate O-rings on vacuum systems
  • lubricate seals in aggressive chemical environments

Micro-Tec conductive silver and carbon greases provides a conductive lubrication layer between sliding surfaces and sealing surfaces. Features of these conductive greases are:

  • Provides ESD safe lubrication
  • Excellent thermal conductivity
  • Excellent lubrication
  • Vacuum compatible grease for silver grease
  • Reduces mechanical wear
  • Reduces wear
  • Service (use) temperature range is -50° to +200°C
  • Protects against corrosion from moisture.

Typical applications include lubrication of vacuum transfer rods, airlock systems, moving vacuum feedthroughs, vacuum seals on O-rings, static grounding on seals or O-rings, heat dissipation and lubrication of switches and circuit breakers.

There is a choice of two Micro-Tec conductive greases:

Micro-Tec CSG7 conductive silver vacuum grease which provides good conductivity, offers thermal conductivity and is vacuum compatible up to 10-6mbar. The consistency is paste like, silicon grease with a high contents of silver and carbon black for conductivity. Supplied in a 7 gram syringe for easy and controlled application

Micro-Tec CCG8 conductive carbon vacuum grease which is a thinner grease and designed for general purpose ESD safe applications. The consistency is a thin paste with high contents of silicon grease with carbon black for conductivity. Supplied in an 80 gram tube.

Vacuum sealant

Hysol 1C / Torr Seal Vacuum Epoxy Resin Sealant kit

Hysol 1C high vacuum epoxy glue and sealant is ideal for sealing leaks on vacuum systems, bonding vacuum component, repair of vacuum components and to seal electrical feedthroughs on high vacuum systems. Hysol 1C epoxy sealant is fully equivalent to Torr Seal sealant. It is a two- component epoxy resin system with no solvents. Due to the low outgassing rates of the cured epoxy it can be used in high vacuum systems at 10-9 mbar or below. The service temperature range for Hysol 1C is -45°C to +120 °C, which is just above the baking temperature for high vacuum systems. Hysol 1C epoxy resin provides excellent bonding on metals, ceramics, glass and most plastics. It is easy to use: mix two equal lengths of resin and hardener. Bonding can be improved by making the bonding surfaces rougher. Pot-life of Hysol 1C is approximately 20 minutes after mixing the two components. It cures at room temperature and reaches full curing after 72 hrs at room temperature. Elevated temperatures between 60 -100 °C greatly reduce curing time.  Cured Hysol 1C can be machined, sanded and polished.

Typical applications include:

  • Vacuum feedthrough sealant
  • Electrical insulation of feedthrough contacts
  • High vacuum leak sealant
  • Epoxy embedding of EM samples
  • Bonding of vacuum components
  • Repair of vacuum components or damaged parts
